When this arrived at first I thought the box must be empty, but there it was, flat against the bottom of the box…and nothing else but paper packing. I somehow had pictured the mirror as being kind of heavy, perhaps even a little clunky, reflecting my past life mirror experiences. But this one is neither!What it is turns out to be some VERY shiny plastic about 1/8″ thick with the admonition that it is covered with a protective plastic film that you can see through, but that the reflection will be murky until you remove the film. Once I did that, the whole room brightened up. Amazing!I’d have to say that I’ve never had a mirror with a reflection as crisp and clear as this one provides, and does it at a most reasonable price. The reason, in engineering terms, is that it is a “front surface mirror”, which means that the reflection doesn’t pass through a layer of glass, bounce off the reflective surface (usually the back of the glass) and passes through the glass back to you. The fuzzing of the image is caused by the light bouncing back and forth between the reflective back and the front layer of the of glass sometimes hundreds of times.Front surface mirrors are used in precision optics, and this mirror will no doubt soon be discovered in schools and colleges that have heretofore been soaked by the expensive treatments necessary for scientific-quality mirrors used in their courses.With this mirror, you get the straight reflection without the glass messing with clarity. I LOVE the reflection it gives…compared to our quite expensive bathroom mirror, it’s reflection much clearer (believe me when I say you can see every whisker, wart and skin cell with it) and side by side the image is quite a bit brighter.But there’s a price to pay for front surface mirrors. They seem to have the ability to reach across the room and collect finger prints (just joking, of course). The surface is easily scratched or marred and it readily collects dust, something the glass in a common mirror protects against.Happily, this mirror is quite inexpensive, and can be replaced whenever you get sick of all the damage it has collected. This mirror is flexible, light and gives reflection quality that most people out of technical professions and science educators never get a chance to experience.If you want or need a portable mirror, this one is near ideal especially if travels and is stored in a protective bag. It weighs next to nothing, so it can go camping without taking hardly any room becoming a weight burden.I give this mirror an A or higher because of it’s image quality, lightness and portability, even though it won’t replace common household mirrors because of its size (it’s pretty small) and obvious fragility.
